Surface is another show that follows an amnesia-stricken victim who has a dark past. However, this show is not good. The characters are irredeemable, the hook is weak, and the ending to the book is bad. This show has a lot of potential but it’s wasted because of these problems. ..

Sophie has a traumatic head injury that leads to extreme memory loss. She’s told by everyone around her that this was as a result of a suicide, but is she really telling the truth?

Sophie is not sure what happened in her life and as a result, sets out to try and piece together her life and figure out what happened. From her shifty husband James to best friend Caroline, it seems everyone has a secret they’re keeping from her. ..

The show’s premise is intriguing, but the execution is poor. The 8 episodes feel like they could have been cut down to a more manageable length, and the story would have benefited from a little more focus.

The padding in Surface is particularly egregious because none of the characters really grow and evolve. There are faint whiffs of arcs materializing with our central quartet (Sophie, James, Caroline and Baden) but it never happens. By the end, every character is in the exact same position they were before, albeit with the plot having moved forward a little and more answers coming to the forefront. ..

The Surface book tries to be something more than just a book about the world around us. However, the characters are not particularly likable and the dialogue is poor.

This show is an introspective character breakdown, but the people in it are just not likable. It’s a waste of time.

The visuals and merch look good, but the story is slow and unfocused. There’s not enough here to make Surface stand out, and with a cliched script and a meandering pace, Surface drowns up the weight of its own expectations.
