Blood Money

However, the man is not alone. He has a wife and two young children with him. The family must fight for their lives against all odds as they try to escape the grave alive. ..

Dong-Ha is about to find his life turned upside down when he married Eun-Joo. She acted coldly toward him, eventually deciding they should get a divorce. Eun-Joo tells Dong-Ha nonchalantly that she’s going to stay at her mums for a while and leaves with the kids.

Dong-Ha’s problems stem from an issue at work involving Professor Kim. He needs to see the foundation’s Director because the man has lost a good deal of Dong-Ha’s money. He took out a loan to pay for Hyun-Woo’s surgery but his colleague at work suggested bribing the director with these funds in order to get a promotion. That’s backfired, he’s lost his money and he’s not able to pay for the hospital fees.

Dong-Ha, a truck driver, found a car with two dead men on the backseat. He decided not to call the authorities because he thought the money on the seat might be enough to pay for his son’s healthcare. There were two bags of money and Dong-Ha quickly scooped them up, greedily stuffing them inside his pockets and taking off. ..

Dong-Ha manages to avoid being seen by the car as it passes him on the road. ..

Dong-Ha drives back to his apartment, avoiding the checkpoints on the road, and decides to drive home. The trouble is, there are cameras and reporters waiting for him.

Dong-Ha manages to avoid the police and eventually drives back home again. He intends to destroy the evidence so it can’t be traced back to him, so he grabs some tarpaulin sheets, buries the men in his garden and takes off with the car, damping it in the middle of the woods.

Dong-Ha drives his car to a remote location and wipes it down to avoid his fingerprints. He then heads home, leaving the other belongings inside the car.

The tracker in the car is a piece of evidence that points to Kwang-Chul as the perpetrator. The woman who rang her boss, Joo-Hyun, is an undercover police officer and this car is part of a larger operation involving Kwang-Chul.

Yong-Soo is the head of the team responsible for choosing the right people for this trade-off. He is constantly frustrated with Kwang-Chul for not finding a better solution. If it were not for Yong-Soo’s efforts, Kwang-Chul may have lost his life and the money he has been working so hard to earn.

Kwang-Chul arrives on the scene and finds the car down by the river. He of course, with the money gone, does a thorough search of the car and realizes it’s been wiped down. He tasks his men with taking the car back to the office for further inspection – and to be crushed.

Eun-Joo looks at her bank balance and is surprised to find that there’s only 4000 won inside. The family are completely broke, but of course they know this. Dong-Ha is sitting on a massive goldmine of money. This is blood money, but money all the same.

Eun-Joo returns home to find her ex-boyfriend, Dong-Ha, has started a new business with her old friend Byeong-Gu. They no longer need to worry about money since Dong-Ha has found a way to launder the money using blood notes and high deposits that will be subject to tax inspections. ..

Dong-Ha’s not the sharpest guy and it turns out that those bodies he’s buried in the garden actually had phones on them. One of those phones starts ringing, with Yeon-Woo complaining that she can hear it from her bedroom late at night.

Dong-Ha lives in a neighbourhood that the police think is suspicious. Kwang-Chul, a detective, decides to go and take a closer look.

Dong-Ha rushes out of the neighbourhood, passing Kwang-Chul and getting a good look at who’s calling the phone. It’s Eun-Joo!

The Episode Review

The show’s main conflict is that Dong-Ha is trying to bury the bodies and cover up the crime scene, but this doesn’t make sense because he could have taken the money and avoided any trouble. It’s possible that if the police found the car, they would investigate it for clues about where the money was, which would put Dong-Ha in even more trouble. ..

The chase is shaping up to be quite the thrilling cat and mouse game. Either way, it’s a minor contrivance that doesn’t really add anything to the proceedings.

There are definite echoes of Ozark in the way this has been set up, but A Model Family certainly has a lot of potential with its storyline. The poverty-stricken family clearly have a lot of secrets, namely that involving Eun-Joo who happens to be involved with these shady men. How? Why? I’m sure we’re going to find out in the future episodes! ..
