Murn After Reading

Murn chasing Leota outside is the beginning of a story that will have a significant impact on the future of the Peacemaker. Murn promises not to hurt her, but he actually knows about his ability to turn into a Butterfly and he decides they need to talk.

Emilia admits that she’s known about Murn for a while, all the way back when he took a bomb blast to the face and barely took any damage. Murn has a lot of Butterfly knowledge and shares some of it now.

These Butterflies came to Earth because they were the last hope for the planet. The one in Goff was actually their leader, but he got ambitious and decided to start taking hosts from positions of power. In order to stop them, this Butterfly took the body of the worst person it could find – Murn. This Butterfly understands exactly what it has done, showing a lick of empathy. However, this was a necessary evil in order to stop the overarching Butterfly plot.

The gang of reporters scour security footage from the plant looking for a clue. They quickly realize that every three days a tank of raw amber is brought in, but where is it coming from?

Auggie is released from prison. He’s lusting for blood and turns his attention to killing Peacemaker. The thing is, Song is already on the case (not to kill obviously) and she prepares to launch an offensive to search Peacemaker’s trailer and arrest him. When Caspar Locke notices all the officers leaving, he rings Murn and tells him they have a problem.

At Peacemaker’s trailer, Vigilante and Goff notice in awe that Goff has drawn a peace symbol. As they begin asking the Butterfly Yes or No questions, the police close in. Thankfully Murn manages to get through to Vigilante, and the gang leave out the roof. Although they manage to get away, the police also find Leota’s diary. ..

Eagley and Goff are on the roof of a building when Song notices them. Eagley starts to check through the woods for them, but things go wrong. The glass jar holding Goff smashes and the butterfly ends up inside Song.

As Vigilante and Peacemaker run for their lives, they hear a loud scream from behind the building. They turn to see a lone officer, Caspar Locke, shot dead. The pair of superheroes are saved by Locke and must leave before he can catch up to them.

Song is fine, of course, and she takes off, ignoring Fitz, and deciding she needs to call some “friends.” Fitz follows her and finds Song on the work computer, clearly communicating with other Butterflies. Goff does confirm that Sophie was “quite fond of him” and attempts to smile in one of the episode’s funnier moments. Fitz is not happy about this development and confronts Song about it later. She denies any wrongdoing but Fitz is not convinced. ..

Goff manages to bring in a whole swarm of Butterflies to his cause, who all touch down in mini UFOs. With a whole bunch of Butterflies at his disposal, Goff storm back into the police station where they control all of the police officers.

Not only do the White Dragon’s have control over all the prisoners, but they also have armour on.

When Peacemaker returns to base, it is revealed that Goff escaped. Murn is shocked and confirms that the diary (the same one Leota planted in his apartment) is with their men. It is with Caspar to be precise, who locked it in his desk drawer earlier in the episode. ..

Economos has confirmed that he found the source of the amber oil. He believes this to be the cow that provides the oil for Butterflies. If they could destroy this source, it would wipe out all other creatures on the planet. This is their only animal and they milk it for amber.

Peacemaker is incredulous over the knowledge being hidden from him, and scoffs at the notion of them being a team. Murn’s secret remains that way, as he tells the team they’re heading out at daybreak for the Ranch.

As the gang prepares to mobilize, Caspar Locke holds a press conference on TV that throws all of their plans completely out the window. He reveals the truth about the aliens and also confirms that every police station right now has one mandate – find Peacemaker. ..

The Episode Review

Despite an overlong piano segment at the end of this episode, Peacemaker returns with another good episode, albeit one that’s not quite as action-packed as last week’s chapter. However, it does deliver on plot development. ..

With Goff now in control of Song and all those Butterflies invading new hosts, Peacemaker and the gang are in some serious trouble. ..

The episode does a great job of emphasizing the stakes and how important it is to kill the “Cow” in order to stop all of the butterflies.

There are also the wildcards in this story - Auggie, who is lusting for blood and could well be the deciding factor in all of this.

Next week’s penultimate episode of “The Good Place” should be quite the intriguing watch and everything is left wide open for where this one may go next.
