Feeding

In the seventh episode of Raised by Wolves Season 2, Paul hauls back numerous fruit from the new tree. Paul claims it’s from sector 7 but of course this is from the tree Sue turned into last episode. As the tribe members gather and begin collecting it up, trying what’s inside, Paul turns away and hurries back to Marcus. He’s convinced that this fruit is going to help people “see the light” and come around to their way of thinking. ..

Father and the other children are surprised when they catch up with the other children who have modified a D-7 surveillance drone to head under the acid lake. One of these creatures has been captured and killed, and Father is determined to find out if the baby is inside. Unfortunately, it turns out that this drone’s signal was soon lost after a brief stint underwater.

Vrille, a drone mechanic, picks up a drone by the shore and returns it to working order. However, she is wearing a mask over her face so that no one knows she is a drone mechanic. When the others see her, Vrille reassures them and claims her earlier bout of violence was simply self-defence but the kids are not so sure. Interestingly, Vrille has seen Tempest’s baby which is still alive. According to Vrille, it’s located in a sea cave 10 miles down shore.

A mother bird notices a tree in the distance and flies over to investigate. Upon touching the tree, she realizes that it is linked to her daughter, Sue. The mother bird exhibits concerns and flies back to warn the other colonists not to eat the fruit from the tree. After all, there is a possibility that it could be poisoned. ..

Marcus and Paul are on a radio transmission when they hear a loud noise. They see a large snake flying through the air and it is coming for them. The snake eats the tree and then it turns into a giant serpent.

Mother flies up and uses her powers to fight the serpent. In fact, the Serpent uses its own powers to send Mother spinning and straight into the ground. As the Serpent flies off, Paul and Marcus decide to take an unconscious Mother to the habitank for recovery.

Unfortunately, she was unable to kill the Serpent because of her programming. It mistook the serpent as a child, and as such, she’s unable to launch any sort of offense. So the only way to solve this is for Mother to be reprogrammed, with Father and the ancient Mithraic android potentially key to resolving this. ..

The ancient android, who is hooked up to numerous tubes, is asked by Mother if she can remove her veil and place it on her. The android responds that she could potentially block her caregiving protocols.

Out in the wild, Tempest and the others find a sea creature with Tempest’s baby. Only…it’s docile. In fact, she finds it feeding her child. Tempest forces them to stand down and not shoot. Tempest decides that the choice has already been made for them, believing that there’s no way she can love the child. As she turns and walks away, Hunter shoots the creature anyway and takes the baby back. She tries to hand it to Tempest but she simply walks away. ..

With Vrille’s spine giving up, the android realizes that she’s about to be signed out as her and Campion walk through the woods together. With her about to be shut down permanently, Vrille scribbles down a bunch of instructions on a tree branch before collapsing.

The Episode Review

This year, the mother-child relationship is a central focus. It crops up all over the show, from Tempest’s rejection of her mother’s care to Mother’s well-meaning but misguided attempts to take care of her child. This ties everything together neatly, as it continues to explore the concept of life and how it relates to our relationships with others.

Despite its erratic plot, “Raised by Wolves” has a captivating appeal that sets it apart from other science fiction shows on television. ..

The ending with the Serpent, as well as Paul’s potential connection to this creature, appears to be the key to the later episodes and how this conflict will be solved, leaving everything resting precariously for next week’s follow-up.
