Upload is a fascinating and ingenious idea that takes place in the near-future with the possibility of you being “uploaded” to a perfect after-life vision, the most prestigious of which being Lakeside. At the centre of this is our main protagonist Nathan, who finds himself caught between several different storylines that weave together across these 10 episodes, ending things with an open conclusion and the hint that a second season is on the way. The humour is well placed and consistent, making for an enjoyable experience that will keep you hooked until the end.

The first episode of Upload is strong in terms of setting the scene and introducing the characters. It may be deceptive, given the turns the show takes going forward, but for now this episode is one of the strongest. The self-driving car death and uploading Nathan to Lakeview are both significant plot points that will be explored more in later episodes.

Nathan is forced to try and acclimatize to this new existence while being guided by his “angel” Nora, who oversees his upload and progress in the digitalized after-life. On its own, this forms a really fascinating and solid concept to play with and early on there’s certainly a lot of Good-Place vibes, with Eleanor’s struggles adjusting to her newfound reality mirroring that of Nathan’s.

The biggest problem with “Upload” is that it doesn’t quite pull off its central premise as effectively as it could. The car crash mentioned earlier is a separate sub-plot that becomes more important over time, alongside the romance between Nora and Nathan which has hints of blossoming early on but then becomes more serious the longer the show goes on. If that wasn’t enough, there’s also Nora’s inner turmoil in the wake of juggling her work. ..

The show’s world-building is strong, with a rich and complex history that feels like it has been built over time. The characters are well-drawn and the plot is compelling, making Upload one of the most interesting and exciting shows on television this year.

The show does a great job of incorporating its near-future concepts naturally into the world, making for an interesting and fascinating read.

The show is funny, but it doesn’t rely on slapstick humor to be funny. Some of the jokes work better than others, but the ones that do are usually simple one-liners. ..

Upload is a sci-fi offering that is full of potential and has the promise of a second season. despite its shortfalls, it is still a solid sci-fi offering that should be checked out.
