Young Hearts Run Free

Cho Yeo-Jeong’s agent rushes up to her, hand over his business card. He awaits Yeo-Jeong, showing up for her big audition. She’s encouraged to stay focused, getting dressed up in historical gear for a big photoshoot.

After boasting about a big role in Tarantino’s new film, a message comes in that shatters everything. Tarantino doesn’t want to work with Yeo-Jeong anymore, believing she’s too old for the part. This could mean trouble for her chances of landing the part. ..

Jung-Don returns to his office, feeling down about the news that Yeo-Jeong has been rejected. He sees the Director here, Ma Tae-Oh, and is crushed by the news. Jung-Don struggles to tell his colleagues about the rejection in the office.

So Hyun-joo, a recent university graduate, shows up unannounced to see Director Ma. After being met with frosty reception from the receptionist, Hyun-joo is quickly put in her place by the Director agreeing to see her. Hyun-Joo has been living in Seoul for 3 weeks and moved from Busan due to the fear of Director Ma. ..

Hyun-Joo, a recent college graduate, is determined to prove herself and become an agent in the entertainment industry. She takes her job seriously, but her director, Ma, tells her that she’s not good enough and hands her some cash to leave. Hyun-Joo is disappointed but decides to stay and work hard. ..

Ma arrives at the meeting just in time to hear Jung-Don admit that Tarantino has rejected Yeo-Jeong’s offer to be his deputy. She is surprised and disappointed to learn that he has not yet told her. ..

The meeting was a disaster from the start, and when one of the agents quit it gave Hyun-Joo the perfect opportunity to pitch her credentials. And it worked too! Chun Je-In saw potential in her and offered her a three-month apprenticeship with a permanent position after depending on her performance. She’ll have to work overtime and have her phone on at all times too. Plus she’s to work with immediate effect. Hyun-Joo accepted! ..

Choi Jin-Hyeok, the new head of HR, accidentally picks up a call from Yeo-Jeong, the company’s controversial CEO. Yeo-Jeong is not one to back down from a confrontation and walks into Choi’s office unannounced. Jun-Hyeok, the company’s top liar, can’t keep up with her and starts to sweat under pressure. Jung-Don, the receptionist who usually stays out of things, ducks behind the desk when Yeo-Jeong enters but is quickly cornered by Hyun-Joo. Hyun-Joo is an ambitious young woman and she spills the beans about Tarantino to Yeo-Jeong on their elevator ride down to Jung-Don’s office. Oh no! ..

When Jung-Don finally catches up with Yeo-Jeong, she out him for his lies and eventually decides to walk away, having had enough. Jung-Don is livid and eventually heads back to the office, running his mouth and desperate to know who spilled the beans. It was Hyun-Joo, as we know, and she’s dropped as an apprentice as a result.

Yeo-Jeong is recommended to get plastic surgery to look younger in order to keep her job with the director. Ma also decides to leave the firm with her in order to avoid losing his biggest client, intent on starting their own agency. ..

Jung-Don is not willing to let his client go just yet and chases after Yeo-Jeong to try and salvage what they had. Only, he’s shocked to find her on the saddle of a wooden horse, and realizes she actually lied about her horse-riding. This helps to open up communication between the two, who speak plainly. Jung-Don reiterates that she’s the best actress he’d ever known, regardless of what she chooses to do.

Yeo-Jeong, a young woman, decides not to get surgery and head out after all, all smiles. Jung-Don happens to be waiting for her outside and there’s a really nice feel-good vibe as the pair decide to rekindle what they had, going back to that agent/client relations once more. Yeo-Jeong realizes she looks old enough as it is, and she doesn’t need to get surgery to try and prove herself for anyone.

Meanwhile, Hyun-Joo tries to make good on her mistakes with Yeo-Jeong, swiping Hee-Sun’s script just like Je-In asked. In doing so, she sees potential in Hyun-Joo and lets her continue her apprenticeship, having passed the test. However, there’s more bad news to come. Mr Wang has passed away, leaving the position vacant.

The Episode Review

The show does well in establishing its characters and setting up the tone, but it can be a bit archetypal at the moment.

This is a strong opening that sets the tone for an intriguing drama to come.
