F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers

The new Hana Yori Dango is a story of love and loss set in the beautiful Thailand town of Hua Hin. The show, which is produced by the same company that produces Boys Over Flowers and Meteor Garden, follows the story of two young lovers, Ayah (Nanjana Ratna) and Joon (Yoo Jae-suk), as they try to make a life for themselves in a place where love is not always easy to find.

Netflix’s Meteor Garden 2018 is a modern take on the classic manga story of Hana Yori Dango. If you’re looking for a similar vibe, you can watch the anime version of Japanese Hana Yori Dango on Crunchyroll.

The story of F4 Thailand is about four boys who are the stars of their school and the envy of those around them. They have everything: money, good looks, privilege, and power. But they also have a lot of heart. They care for each other and for their school, which is the only place where they can be themselves.

A girl who isn’t from within upsets the applecart, clueless about the rules and not interested in knowing them. She’s just there to go to school. Until she clashes with the leader of F4 which begins a series of battles that eventually shows glimmers of romance.

Patha Thongpan, director of Thailand’s GMMTV, has announced his intention to remake the classic Thai film The King and I. This new version will be based on the original storyline but with a “now” freshness and a unique Thai aesthetic that meets the original. ..

This means that Thai dramas are becoming more realistic and less over-the-top. They’re delivered in a more believable, less day-time-TV fashion that’s way more watchable than some of the old-skool offerings.

F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers Cast

Many Thai TV stars are signed with long-term contracts, and this has led to some familiar faces cropping up on the same channel. GMM, which has a dedicated BL (Boys Love) drama following, has previously paired two of the F4 leads in BL series together. So, it will be interesting to see how they fare in a drama where chemistry is crucial to live up to the brand.

The two lead actors in 2gether, Vachirawit ‘Bright’ Chivaaree and Metawin ‘Win’ Opas-iamkajorn, are not after the same girl.

Ren is played by newcomer Dew Sutivanichsak, while Kavin is played by veteran actor Ji-hoo. However, the focus seems to be more on the character of Kavin than Ren in the current content, possibly indicating a different balance in the storyline. ..

Hirunkit ‘Nani’ Changkham (Akira Mimasaka/Woo-bin/Meizuo) rounds out the Flower Boys, but in this version he’s both playful and a fighter. Tontawan ‘Tu’ Tantivejakul plays ordinary but forthright girl turned love interest, Gorya (Tsukushi Makino/Jan-di/Shancai). ..

According to the director, all of these actors are playing their characters very well. We’ll see how their performance holds up in the final product.

Watch Tips

If you’re watching live, this week’s episode started at 8:45pm Thai time on YouTube, rather than 8:30pm. Over the last few weeks we’ve noticed a delayed run time that includes a countdown. Building the anticipation? I haven’t seen anything definitive confirming it will always start at 45 minutes past, but it does give an extra few ticks to get your snacks and edge your screen to just the right angle. ..

If you’re watching YouTube videos live, be sure to back up to the beginning of each segment so you don’t miss anything. YouTube automatically puts you at the live moment, so you might miss a scene or two. ..

As we shift from one chunk of story to the next, the link to the following chunk zips by super-fast. If you’re watching via YouTube, you can back it up a second to catch the link and save yourself the trouble of having to search for it.

If you have any further tips, please add them in the comments section. Here’s to a smooth view for all😊.

Episode 7 Random Thoughts: A different yet familiar view

Ren was cut from F4 after a misunderstanding led to all-out war between the group. ..

The scenes with Michael Jackson punching the wall and sitting on the other side of the door are nods to the Meteor Garden versions of the story. But this time, Michael plays scenes that were previously the Thyme/Dao Mi Si and even Gorya/Shancai roles. This is poignant and fitting for the narrative, but interesting for the juxtaposition. ..

The team at F4 Thailand is hard at work trying to bring in all the familiar moments without having to recreate all the other 30-ish episodes they don’t have space for in this version. Maybe similar visuals will turn up in later episodes, appropriately assigned. Is it enough? Are you feeling the love?

Next week is Thyme’s birthday party, so there will be a lot of good drama to come.
