The Magicians

Similarities – Magic & Teen Angst

The Magicians is a new series that is set to be released in the fall of 2016. It is based on the novel series by Lev Grossman and stars Jason Ralph as Quentin Coldwater, Stella Maeve as Alice Kingsley, Hale Appleman as Eliot Spitzer, and Emmy Rossum as Margo Green. The show is said to be similar to Twilight and Harry Potter, with some people finding the clash of tones off-putting but others being drawn to it. ..

Quentin Coldwater enrolls at Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy after being recruited by a secret academy. At the heart of all this lies our main character, Quentin Coldwater, who is graced with magical abilities. Quentin is determined to use his powers for good and learn more about the world around him, even if that means facing challenges and learning new skills.

Julia’s story is interesting because it contrasts with Quentin’s. Quentin was denied entry to the university because he didn’t have a college degree, while Julia found her dreams shattered when she was told she couldn’t attend the same school as she wanted.

The Magicians is a five-season series that does well to flesh out its characters and story. If you’re interested in watching the show, you’ll be happy with the amount of content that’s included.

The Irregulars

Similarities – Alt-History & Teen Group

Netflix’s latest teen drama, “The Nevers,” is a mix of familiar characters and the unfamiliar. While this one is more of a polarizing choice, it does have a lot of similarities to “The Nevers.”

Jessie is a high school student in the early 1900s, and she’s been having strange dreams that seem to foreshadow a dark future. She starts to worry about what it could be, and whether it’s related to her recent discovery of an old journal from the 1800s.

Sister Bea is the natural choice to rally the group together and thrust them headfirst into the throngs of the supernatural thanks to Dr. Watson recruiting her to his cause. ..

With no Sherlock in sight, a very moody Watson offers Bea money in exchange for solving several gnarly and twisted cases. It’s not perfect but it is another alternate history adventure.

The Irregulars season review: A strong start, but some growing pains We loved the first few episodes of The Irregulars season 2, but there were some growing pains during the course of the season. Despite that, we thought the show had a strong start and are looking forward to seeing what happens in the next few episodes.

Misfits

Similarities – Banter & Characters

The show is set in a small town in the UK, and it follows the lives of its teenagers as they navigate their way through high school, relationships, and the ever-changing world around them. The series is full of humor and heartbreak, and it’s one of the most entertaining shows on television.

The group of young offenders out doing community service are struck by lightning during a storm and start to develop superpowers.

The adventure is well paced and well written, but it may be darker than many people expect. ..

The Nevers

Similarities – Mystery

The series is set in a world where the supernatural is real, and where people can see and interact with ghosts, vampires, werewolves and other monsters. Joss Whedon created the show with his friend and fellow writer-director David S. Goyer, who also wrote the screenplay for Nevers. The series is produced by Joss Whedon’s production company Mutant Enemy and distributed by Netflix.

As the women of the city struggle to keep their heads above water, they find themselves using their unique abilities to survive. Some use their powers for good, while others use them for evil. But in the end, all of them must find a way to work together and stay safe in a city that is rapidly changing.

The first six episodes of the new season of “The Nevers” set the scene nicely for what’s to follow. Some good characterization and intriguing ideas were sprinkled in along the way.

In this episode of the Nevers, we recap our thoughts on the film. We discuss its strengths and weaknesses, as well as some of our favorite moments.

Legion

Similarities – Visuals & Mind-Bending Story

Legion is a sci-fi series that exists in a world of mutants and space marines. It’s also one of the more unusual and visually stunning shows on television right now.

David Haller is a troubled young man who spends his time institutionalized after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. The show revolves around his experiences and the people around him. ..

The journey begins with Legion, a show that is quickly becoming one of the better small screen offerings. The story follows a group of people who are affected by a virus that has caused them to turn into zombies. The show does an excellent job of showing the effects of the virus on its characters, and it also ends with a satisfying conclusion.

Our thoughts on Legion are here!

Blue Exorcist

Similarities – Supernatural

Blue Exorcist is an anime with a serious supernatural plot. Sadao and Blue Exorcist’s protagonist Rin have similar personalities and demonic backgrounds. Funnily enough, Rin’s mission in Blue Exorcist is the murder of his father Satan. Irony aside, Blue Exorcist is jam-packed with incredible supernatural elements and characters that will keep you invested.

The characters in this anime are well-rounded and offer likable personalities. The anime does a decent job exploring the side characters’ history with demons and building upon their relationship with Rin. The abilities Rin and his companion yield are creative and visually immersive. You’ll find yourself cheering our heroes on during their bouts with crude and menacing adversaries.

Despite its more serious plotline, Blue Exorcist features a small amount of comedy. This is done through witty jokes and visual gags, which are decent enough to allow viewers to take a break after its darker and more intense moments. ..

Shadow and Bone

Similarities – Blended Magic & Science

Based on the popular Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone season 1 adapts the first novel while taking elements of its ‘Six of Crows’ follow-up. The result is a wonderful medley of influences that lean into YA territory. However, there’s enough for fantasy fans to enjoy too – especially as this has been renewed.

The Fold is a large, shadowy wall that separates two continents. Across both sides of the Fold are characters who seek to try and swing the upcoming battle in their favour. Grisha, who are magic-wielders, play a significant role in this world. ..

Alina is a Grisha so powerful they could change the fate of the world. ..

A Discovery Of Witches

Similarities – Drama & Romance

A well written drama with some truly beautiful imagery and interesting and endearing characters. ..

Diana Bishop is the last living witch. She’s a powerful witch who has been fighting against the vampires and demons for years. In Season 2, we follow her as she tries to protect her friends and family from these creatures. Along the way, she falls in love with a human, and must decide whether or not to turn him into a vampire.

The first season of “Game of Thrones” is strong, but there are also some great features here. Fans of romance and fantasy offerings should be in their element.

A Discovery Of Witches is a new series that premieres on October 12th. We’re excited to share our thoughts on the show and what we think makes it so unique.

Carnival Row

Similarities – A Hierarchical World

Rycroft Philostrate is a journalist who begins looking into a series of grisly murders. Along the way, he becomes entangled in the politics and issues of a working fairy called Vignette Stonemoss. Together, the pair set out to uncover what’s really going on.

The show is full of potential and has a lot of promise. The worldbuilding is impressive and the mystery elements are well done. The writing is strong and the characters are interesting. I would definitely recommend watching this series.

Carnival Row is a must-see for anyone visiting the city. The vibrant and colorful streetscape is a sight to behold, and the food and drinks are top-notch. We loved our time at Carnival Row, and would definitely recommend it to others!

NOS4A2

Similarities – Supernatural Elements & Horror

The popular book of the same name, NOS4A2, is an engrossing, enjoyable horror series. With an inspired Zachary Quinto at the helm, the characters do well to instill their mark on this series, even if the second season is a step down in quality. The first season was well-made and had some great scares, but the second season feels like it’s missing something. It’s still a good series overall, but I would recommend waiting for the next movie to come out before giving it a try again.

Vic McQueen is a teenager who learns early on that she possesses a special gift; she’s able to transport herself wherever she desires via a mysterious bridge called The Shorter Way. Vic’s family and friends are amazed by her ability, but they can’t understand why it works. Vic spends her days exploring the city and its many attractions, but each time she returns home, she feels exhausted. She knows that she needs to find out more about The Shorter Way and its secrets, but until then, she’ll just have to keep exploring.

In this exciting and suspenseful story, Vic must use her quick thinking and strategy to outwit the evil Charlie Manx and save the children from his clutches.

It’s not the best horror out there, but it’s a consistency enjoyable one that makes for a solid binge-watch.

NOS4A2 is a new update for the Overwatch game that we think is great.
